Powerloom Industry In India

The powerloom industry has traditionally been one of the cornerstones of the Indian economy in terms of foreign exchange earnings and employment. In 2011, the Indian textile and apparel industry size (domestic and exports) was estimated to be US$ 89 billion. The powerloom industry is equipped with approximately 2,354,935 looms, concentrated in clusters across the country - Erode, Salem, Madurai, Ichalkarnaji, Solapur, Bhiwandi, Bhilwara and Malegaon, to name a few.

In 2012-13, powerloom exports accounted for around 42 per cent of the total textile exports. Between 2007-08 and 2012-13, powerloom exports grew from US$ 7.7 billion to US$ 13.1 billion, at a growth rate of 11.1 per cent.

Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council

The Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) is the nodal agency for the development and promotion of exports of powerloom products. The Council undertakes direct promotional activities such as participation in international trade shows, sending and hosting trade delegations, and sustained image building exercises through advertisements abroad, publications and audiovisuals.
