Handloom Industry In India

Handloom sector employs about 4.3 million people, is the second-largest employment provider for the rural population in India after agriculture. The sector accounts for around 15 per cent of the total cloth produced in the country (excluding wool, silk and yarn) and has the largest infrastructure with 2.3 million weaving looms. US is the major exporter of handloom products from India, followed by UK and Germany. In 2014-15, India exported Handloom products worth US$ 370.22 million

The Handloom Export Promotion Council

The Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) is a statutory body constituted under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India to promote the export of all handloom products like fabrics, home furnishings, carpets and floor coverings, etc. HEPC was constituted in the year of 1965 with 65 members and its present membership is around 2000 spread all over the country.
